Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s former Finance Minister, has been declared “Wanted” on Interpol’s official website, intensifying international efforts to locate him over alleged misconduct during his time in office.
On Interpol’s platform, the charge against Ofori-Atta is listed as “using public office for profit,” along with a description of his physical features.
The listing follows a renewed notice from Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which declared Ofori-Atta wanted after he failed to appear for a scheduled interrogation on June 2.
At a press briefing held the same day, the Special Prosecutor announced that steps were underway to secure an Interpol Red Notice and begin extradition proceedings to return him to Ghana.
Ofori-Atta is being investigated in connection with several high-profile cases, including revenue assurance arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA); the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC); procurement and financial transactions involving the National Cathedral project; a Ministry of Health deal with Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the supply and maintenance of 307 ambulances; and the management and disbursement of funds from the GRA’s Tax P-Fund Account.
The former Finance Minister, through his lawyers, has insisted that he is currently unable to physically honour the OSP’s invitation due to a scheduled medical procedure.
His lawyers requested a virtual meeting, a proposal the OSP rejected.
