On February 4, 2025, parliamentary proceedings descended into chaos as insults and political jabs overshadowed constructive debate during a session meant to honour the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah.
Tensions flared when Tamale Central MP, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, questioned the accuracy of tributes paid to JB Danquah by the minority, triggering heated exchanges across the chamber.
Speaker Andrew Asiamah’s attempt to restore order by limiting contributions to parliamentary leadership inadvertently silenced other MPs, further fuelling discontent.
A particularly contentious moment occurred when Korle-Klottey MP, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, sought to contribute but was overlooked by the Speaker in favour of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Amidst the disorder, an unidentified voice from the minority side hurled a derogatory remark at Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, referring to her as the “daughter of a murderer” and alluding to accusations against her late father, former President Jerry John Rawlings.
The offensive comment sparked widespread condemnation, highlighting the deep political divisions within Parliament and raising concerns about the lack of decorum in legislative proceedings. While Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin managed to calm the situation, the incident has prompted calls for an investigation. Damongo MP Samuel Jinapor and other NPP members have denied making the remarks.
Other MPs, particularly from the majority, have urged a thorough probe to identify the culprits and uphold parliamentary integrity.
