2024 Elections: Our commitment to peace is intact – IGP

The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has urged the collective effort of the citizenry to sustain the country’s “enviable” democracy for the benefit of future generations.

He stated that the fourth republic has come to stay and will stay for the enjoyment and management of unborn generations, promising that there will continue to be peace in Ghana and that the rule of law will also have its course as far as democratic dispensation is concerned.

Receiving a delegation from Parliament at the Police Headquarters on Tuesday, July 16, the IGP called on all Ghanaians to come on board to have the country and democracy sustained and progressively developed for the good of today and the future.

The delegation from Parliament, which was led by the 2nd deputy Speaker and MP for Fomena, Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako Dampare, visited the IGP to present to them the “Democracy Cup,” a cup that was instituted by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Alban Babgin, to help promote peace before, during, and after elections.

The Democracy Cup will be presented to key stakeholders ahead of a Democracy Cup football match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium on July 17th.

In his address, Dr. Dampare said he and his team will be present at the stadium not only to patronise the game but as a symbol of promoting peace in the December elections.

“Tomorrow we will be there live and coloured, both to be part of the celebration and also to ensure that there is peace, security, law, and order during the whole exercise, and beyond the second one, to assure you and the rest of Ghana that our democracy is beautiful, resilient, and has become enviable.”

“So we invite all Ghanaians, both young and old, male and female, for us to work together in order to sustain it for our grandchildren to come and continue from where we left it,” he said.

He additionally emphasised institutional commitment, urging all security services under the National Security Council, led by President Akufo-Addo, to perform their best, particularly in the upcoming elections.

“The last one is also institutional commitment, and we say this on behalf of the National Election Taskforce, which comprises all the security agencies under our leadership as a police institution. Because of its nature as an internal activity, the commitment comes from us, the Police, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Prison Service, the Ghana Fire Service, the Custom Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Immigration Service, and all the intelligent agencies and all the related security apparatus under the state, under the umbrella of the National Security Council.”

“Under the chairmanship of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, we want to assure Ghanaians that our commitment to ensuring peace, security, law, and order during this election period and beyond is solid and intact, and we can assure you that the results will be evidenced for all to see,” IGP Dampare furthered.

He said they want the whole of Ghana to know that the Fourth Republican Journey will help uplift Ghanaians and their generations unborn, and that they are ever poised to play their part in the context of all other stakeholders in ensuring that Ghana continues to be a beacon of hope and a leader in the world where other countries can come to tap knowledge from.
