Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed support for the Minority’s efforts to demand accountability over an alleged $1.7 billion loss linked to the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, Dr Bawumia made the comments during a meeting between the two at the former vice-president’s private residence in Accra on Monday, August 24.
The meeting, he said, focused on party matters and the agenda of the Minority ahead of Parliament’s emergency sitting convened by the Speaker.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said Dr Bawumia expressed confidence in his leadership of the Minority and urged him to remain focused on the financial losses identified in the International Monetary Fund’s August 2026 report.
“He urged me to remain focused on the loss of over $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme,” he said in a statement.
He said Dr Bawumia further cautioned against efforts that could divert public attention from the issue and urged the Minority to use parliamentary procedures to hold the government accountable.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said he assured Dr Bawumia that the matter remained firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament resumed.
“I further informed him that this colossal loss, under the watch of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, is firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes today,” he said.
The Minority Leader said the caucus would pursue the matter “to the fullest extent of our ability”, while ensuring that its actions remained guided by the national interest.
He said the Minority would continue pressing for answers until Ghanaians received a clear account of the circumstances surrounding the reported losses.
The reported $1.7 billion figure and its attribution to GoldBod and the BoG have also been the subject of an ongoing political and economic debate.
