President Nana Akufo-Addo is today, October 16, 2023, scheduled to visit communities that have been adversely affected by the discharge of water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.
So far, the spillage has displaced over 5,000 people, who have evacuated their homes to safer towns and districts. No lives have been reported as lost.
In a Facebook post, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, stated as follows:
“The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will visit the districts severely hit by the floods occasioned by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam on Monday, October 16, 2023.”
“The President will be joined on this tour by members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee, which has been set up to coordinate the government’s response to the flooding and help bring relief to those affected.”
On Friday, the President formed a nine-person inter-ministerial team under the leadership of his chief of staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, to plan the distribution of aid to those impacted by the spill.
Members of the inter-ministerial committee include the Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah; Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery; Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul; Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta; and the Minister of Local Government, Daniel Kwaku Botwe.
Other members are Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye; Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah; Minister for Environment, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie; Minister for Sanitation, Freda Prempeh; Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor; and the Minister for Information.
President Akufo-Addo is also expected to make a significant announcement about government intervention.
