The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has strongly condemned the assault and battery of a midwife at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, describing the incident as “unprovoked” and unacceptable.
According to a press release issued on June 5, 2026, the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when a family member of a patient allegedly attacked the health worker while she was enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy. A video of the incident has since circulated on social media, drawing widespread public attention and concern.
“The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate strongly condemns the assault and battery on one of our staff at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic,” the statement said, adding that the midwife was performing her lawful duties at the time of the attack.
The Directorate expressed full support for the affected staff member and assured all health workers across the region of their safety and protection while on duty.
“We stand firmly behind the affected midwife and every member of staff across our facilities. They come to work to serve the public, and they must be able to do so without fear of physical harm,” it emphasized.
The Ghana Police Service was also commended for its swift intervention, which helped restore calm at the facility and resulted in the arrest of the alleged perpetrator. The suspect is expected to be arraigned before court on Monday, June 8, 2026.
The Health Directorate used the opportunity to reiterate its zero-tolerance stance on violence against health professionals, warning that such acts will not be treated as a form of grievance redress.
Per directives from the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, clients have been urged to channel complaints through designated Client Service Desks at all health facilities. These desks, the statement noted, are mandated to escalate concerns appropriately for resolution.
“Assault is not a channel for redress, and it will not be treated as one,” the release stressed.
The Directorate further appealed to the public to remain calm, respect health workers, and use official complaint mechanisms where necessary, while reaffirming its commitment to delivering quality healthcare services across the Greater Accra Region.
