President Akufo-Addo has congratulated the NDC for emerging victorious in Tuesday’s by-election in Assin North.
Touting the democratic credentials of the country, the President noted that the “peaceful and credible” Assin North by-election will strengthen them further.
He also commended the Electoral Commission, the police, and the media for their collective roles in ensuring a successful by-election.
“I congratulate warmly the Chairperson and Members of the Electoral Commission, again, for a job well done. The security services are to be commended for maintaining law and order during the holding of the elections, as is the media for providing extensive coverage before, during, and after the elections.”
While asking supporters of the NPP not to despair over the loss, he expressed confidence that the party will recapture the seat in the near future.
“I urge members of my party, the New Patriotic Party, to keep their heads up, recognizing that, in a democracy, there are winners and losers and that we live to fight another day”, the President stated.
He added that “we once held the Assin North seat, and I am confident that, sooner rather than later, Assin North will be blue again.”
The President has been criticized by the NDC for a “prejudicial” remark he made during the final day of campaigning in the constituency that Gyakye Quayson must not be voted in because his pending court case may end him in prison.
The NPP had held the Assin North constituency since the year 2000, when it was created, until 2020, when its candidate, Abena Durowaa Mensah, lost it to the re-elected MP James Gyakye Quayson.
Mr. Quayson defeated the NPP’s Charles Opoku in Tuesday’s by-election by polling 17,245 votes, representing 57.56%, while Mr. Opoku got 12,630 votes, representing 42.15%.
