The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers,” over an alleged threat of death against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The 46-year-old was arrested on Monday, August 24, 2026, following the circulation of a video on social media in which he is alleged to have issued the threat against the NSA Director-General.
According to the Police, Okai is currently in custody and assisting with investigations into the matter.
The Command said the arrest was part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and determine the appropriate legal action.
“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to assure the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and to take appropriate action in accordance with the law,” the Police said in a statement.
The Police also urged the public to refrain from circulating or sharing unverified information while investigations are ongoing.
The arrest comes amid heightened public attention on issues involving Ghana’s sports administration and follows the emergence of the video on social media.
Police have not disclosed further details about the alleged threat or indicated whether Okai has been formally charged.
The former boxer remains in Police custody as investigations continue.
