The Democratic Credentials Network Ghana (DCN Ghana), a policy think tank based in Accra, has expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of violence in the Bawku conflict.
In a statement released on April 12, 2025, the organisation called for an immediate ceasefire from all parties involved, including law enforcement agencies and local youth groups.
“We further call for an immediate return to negotiations for lasting peace to prevail,” the statement read.
DCN Ghana emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving the protracted conflict and urged all stakeholders to lay down their arms and engage in peaceful discussions.
The Bawku conflict, rooted in a longstanding chieftaincy dispute between the Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic groups, has been a persistent source of tension in Ghana’s Upper East Region.
At the heart of the dispute is the rightful occupancy of the Bawku skin, a traditional leadership position, which has triggered intermittent clashes and instability over the years.
DCN Ghana also appealed to law enforcement agencies to exercise restraint and avoid reprisal attacks, stressing the need for a balanced approach to restoring peace.
The organisation expressed hope that through collective efforts and open dialogue, a peaceful resolution to the conflict can be achieved.
