Bawumia criticises mass dismissals under Mahama administration

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, has condemned what he describes as politically motivated dismissals of public sector workers under President John Mahama’s government.

In a statement released on Thursday, Bawumia accused the new administration of unfairly terminating the employment of Ghanaians solely because they were hired under the previous government. He noted that these dismissals contradict the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) campaign promise of creating jobs.

“It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless,” he said.

“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people.”

Bawumia expressed particular concern over reports that the dismissals extend to directors in public service roles, security personnel, teachers, and nurses.

He urged President Mahama to halt the dismissals and reverse what he described as unfair treatment of professionals whose only crime was being appointed during the previous administration.

The former Vice President emphasized that governance should be about continuity and progress rather than political retribution.

“When Ghanaians voted for change, it was to continue national development with different leaders at the helm, not to destroy the livelihoods of hardworking citizens,” he added.
