President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged recipients of the 2024 National Honours and Awards, as well as the Presidential Honours for Distinguished Service, to use their recognition as motivation for further achievements.
Speaking at the Accra International Conference Centre during the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo described the honourees as symbols of resilience, selflessness, and hope. He emphasized the transformative impact of their contributions to Ghanaian society.
“Let this recognition inspire you to reach even greater heights. Your efforts have catalysed change and embody the very best of Ghana,” the President remarked.
He called on all Ghanaians to engage actively in nation-building to secure a brighter future for the next generation, highlighting the honourees’ achievements in governance, education, and industry as pivotal to Ghana’s progress.
“Together, we can build a nation that serves as a beacon of hope for Africa and the world,” he affirmed, pledging continued dedication to Ghana’s prosperity.
Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia received the highest honour, the Order of the Star of the Volta – Officer. He was honoured for his contribution to promoting religious tolerance and peace.
Awards were also presented to professionals, businessmen, activists, statesmen, cabinet members, and MPs for their contributions to national development.
The National Honours and Awards, Ghana’s premier awards ceremony, recognizes distinguished service across various fields. Established in 1960 under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the awards celebrate creativity, excellence, and hard work. Over the years, this initiative has become a cornerstone of national recognition for both Ghanaians and foreign nationals contributing to the nation’s development.
In 2023, President Akufo-Addo introduced the Presidential Honours for Distinguished Service to recognize resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative acknowledged the collective efforts of citizens, institutions, and global partners in safeguarding lives and mobilizing resources.
This year’s honourees include individuals, institutions, and partners recognized under categories such as the Presidential Honours for Distinguished Service, the Grand Medal, and the Order of the Volta.
The Order of the Volta, one of Ghana’s highest honours, comprises three classes—Companion, Officer, and Member—each symbolized by unique insignia representing the Volta Hydro Scheme, freedom, and justice. It acknowledges exceptional service in civil service, education, health, the arts, industry, and public service.
The Order is divided into Military and Civil divisions, with the military class awarded for distinguished service outside direct combat. The award is not conferred posthumously or as an immediate honour. Recipients are entitled to use post-nominal initials corresponding to their class—CV (Companion), OV (Officer), and MV (Member).
