Mrs. Elsie Addo Awadzi, the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has announced her decision to take early retirement, effective February 28, 2025.

Following that, President John Dramani Mahama has accepted her decision and expressed gratitude for her dedicated service to the Bank of Ghana and the nation.

In a statement issued by the Presidency on February 7, 2025, President Mahama acknowledged Mrs. Addo Awadzi’s remarkable contributions to Ghana’s financial sector and wished her success in her future endeavours.

Appointed in February 2018, Mrs. Addo Awadzi made history as the second woman to serve as Deputy Governor in the bank’s 62-year history. Her tenure was marked by significant strides in financial regulation, stability, and inclusion.

Before joining the Bank of Ghana, Mrs. Addo Awadzi served as Senior Counsel in the Financial and Fiscal Law Unit of the IMF’s Legal Department in Washington, D.C., where she contributed to global financial system reforms and provided expert advice on public financial management.

Her contributions to Ghana’s financial sector also include serving two terms as Commissioner of the Securities & Exchange Commission, where she played a key role in financial legal reforms across Ghana and Africa.

Additionally, she held positions as a senior treasury dealer at Barclays Bank Ghana Limited and practiced law in the private sector.
