Carlos Queiroz has left his position as head coach of Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, following an emergency meeting with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The GFA announced on Thursday, October 1, 2026, that it had reached an agreement with Queiroz to end their working relationship, bringing his brief tenure as Black Stars coach to an end.
The decision comes after Ghana’s difficult start to the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, results that left Ghana at the bottom of their qualifying group and increased pressure on the technical team.
Queiroz’s position had also come under scrutiny following Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although the Black Stars advanced beyond the group stage, their campaign ended in the Round of 32 with a defeat to Colombia. Ghana failed to record a win in the knockout phase, with concerns also raised about the team’s attacking output.
Queiroz’s tenure ultimately ended after seven matches across all competitions, with the Portuguese coach recording one win, two draws and four defeats.
The latest change adds to a period of uncertainty surrounding the technical direction of the Black Stars as Ghana seeks to revive its campaign in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
The GFA is expected to announce further details on the next steps for the national team following Queiroz’s departure.
