The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has affirmed the credibility of Ghana’s December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections, despite a few challenges reported across polling stations.
In its preliminary statement issued on December 8, CODEO disclosed that 4,000 trained and accredited independent observers were deployed nationwide, with 1,500 serving as Rapid Response Observers (RROs) at a statistically representative sample of polling stations.
Using the Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) method, CODEO provided credible insights into the electoral process, emphasising adherence to Ghana’s electoral laws and procedures.
“From setup to vote counting, the Electoral Commission’s arrangements were generally adequate and credible,” CODEO declared.
However, delays in the opening of polling stations were noted in regions such as Northern, Oti, and Greater Accra, attributed to late arrivals of officials and materials.
The coalition confirmed that 98% of polling stations allowed voters to cast their ballots in secret, with a similar percentage validating ballot papers before issuance. Security arrangements were largely effective, with unarmed personnel present at most polling stations, ensuring a peaceful process.
CODEO expressed concern over incidents of voter intimidation and harassment, particularly in areas like Awutu Senya East, Odododiodio, and Ahafo Ano, where assaults and destruction of electoral materials occurred. Despite these challenges, the coalition praised the swift intervention of security personnel.
Acknowledging the peaceful conduct of the elections, CODEO commended all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, political parties, and security forces, while urging patience as the official results are finalised.
