The Council of Elders of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has stated that the stability of the party is an important requirement for its progress as it prepares to contest the 2024 elections.
In a statement on Monday, December 18, 2023, the Council of Elders declared that, based on Article 68 of the CPP’s constitution, the purported decision by some aggrieved members to form an “Interim Council” is “unconstitutional.”.
Accordingly, the Council of Elders stated that it has revoked the said decision with immediate effect.
It further declared that any attempt by the party to remove the leader and chairperson, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankuma, is unconstitutional based on Article 68.
The Council of Elders also called on the party’s Former Secretary, Comrade Subiri Issah, to immediately withdraw the fresh legal suit he has taken against Madam Sarpong Kumankuma.
“The Council of Elders has also become aware of the involvement of its Former Secretary, Comrade Subiri Issah, in a fresh uncalled for legal action against the Chaiperson and Leader of the party, supposed to have been triggered by the “Party” to force her to resign from her position unaccountably,” the statement said.
“Comrade Issah is therefore urged to withdraw this unnecessary latest suit from court,” it added.
In addition, the Council urged the “chairperson and leader of the party to convene a central committee meeting to take quick remedial action to stem the further deterioration of the fortunes of the party”.
The Council of Elders urged all factions and aggrieved members to stay calm in the supreme interest of the party, while emphasising that Madam Sarpong Kumankuma proceeds with the reorganisation exercise “per the consent judgement of the High Court suit number GJ/0859/2023.
