Lawyer Kwabena Boateng of the NPP shoved away competition from his closest contender, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, in the Ejisu by-election, securing some 27,782 valid votes, representing 55.8%.
Owusu Aduomi polled 21,534 votes, equivalent to 43.3%.
Gabriel Agyemang, an independent candidate, had 222 votes (0.4%), Beatrice Boakye of the LPG secured 140 votes (0.3%), the CPP’s Esther Osei got 89 votes (0.2%), and Joseph Attakorah, a third independent candidate, managed only 23 votes, or 0.1%.
Although the constituency is an NPP stronghold, the dynamics of the by-election were different considering that Aduomi, a three-term NPP MP, was competing against his party as an independent candidate.
Aduomi had accused the NPP of unfair treatment in the primary, leading to his inability to represent them in Tuesday’s election.
The by-election was generally incident-free, except for the alleged bribery of two EC officials by the NPP MP for Kwadaso, Kingsley Nyarko.
As a response, the Electoral Commission, in a statement, said it has commenced investigations into the incident after withdrawing from post the officers involved.
The Commission, in an updated statement, said the money was advanced by the MP to the officer to buy lunch. Nonetheless, the Commission indicated it has involved the police in conducting a criminal investigation into the matter.
The by-election was occasioned by the demise of the MP for the contituency, JohnAmpontuah Kumah, on March 7.
