Today, Saturday, December 7, 2024, Ghanaians head to the polls to elect their next leader, marking the end of President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.
As is customary during major elections in Ghana, some voters began queuing at polling stations as early as the night before, equipped with various items to secure their spots for the day.
This election is anticipated to witness a high voter turnout, with each side eager to secure victory for their candidate after President Akufo-Addo’s two-term rule.
The NPP is determined to break the “eight-year cycle” that traditionally alternates power between the two dominant parties, while the NDC is resolute in thwarting this goal.
According to the Electoral Commission, the special voting exercise saw an impressive 83% voter turnout, signalling strong enthusiasm for this year’s election.
In a national address on Friday, President Akufo-Addo called on Ghanaians to uphold the country’s democratic credentials by voting peacefully and avoiding any acts of violence.
Similarly, the Electoral Commission has assured the public of its readiness to conduct transparent and credible polls.
Political analysts predict a tightly contested race between the NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NDC’s John Mahama, further intensifying the stakes in this historic election.
