Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has voiced strong criticism over the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, accusing the process of denying her a fair hearing.
Justice Torkornoo was dismissed from her position on Monday, September 1, 2025, under Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.
The decision, which took immediate effect, followed a recommendation by a committee formed under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition filed by citizen Daniel Ofori. The Presidency confirmed the move in an official statement.
In a television interview with TV3 on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Madam Akuffo, a member of the Council of State, described the removal as mishandled and unjust. She argued that the process was akin to a treason trial, despite not being a formal trial.
“She did not receive a fair trial. Even though this was not technically a trial, the way it was handled was as though it were one for treason,” Madam Akuffo stated.
Akuffo further questioned the severity of the allegations against Torkornoo, suggesting they were not substantial enough to justify such an extreme outcome, especially for someone holding the highest judicial office.
The former Chief Justice also expressed concern over the long-term implications for the judiciary, stating that Torkornoo’s removal had weakened the institution.
She lamented the procedural “rigmarole” that accompanied the dismissal, which she described as unworthy of any judge, let alone a Chief Justice.
“These allegations lack the gravity that should lead to such a grave outcome. “I pray that no Chief Justice or judge ever has to go through this process again.” Madam Akuffo added.
