JPCann Associates Limited, a renowned corporate training firm, has donated five brand-new laptop computers to the Ghana Communication Technology University as part of its support for Vice-Chancellor Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa’s Silicon Valley Agenda and the university’s ongoing digitisation project.
The donation, made on September 10, 2024, aligns with the university’s appeal and endowment process aimed at advancing its vision of becoming a world-class institution.
Donating the items, Director of Business Development and Administration at JPCann Associates Limited, Tracy Cann revealed that her exposure to knowledge at GCTU had refined her skills.
“It is a responsibility and not an abundance of JPCann Associates Limited to give,” she remarked, while expressing her gratitude and commitment to giving back to the university.
Prof. Ohene Afoakwa expressed his appreciation to JPCann for being the first to donate the requested computers to the school. He applauded the company’s kindness and support for the university community.
He said, “We are honoured by your kind gesture, and on behalf of the council management and staff of the university, we are thankful for this generous donation, and I can assure you that we are going to put it to good use.”
He described the institution’s initiative to create a social digital hub to advance its digitisation efforts, highlighting how the donated computers will be crucial to achieving this vision.
The Vice-Chancellor further intimated that a special donor plaque would be created to honour the institutions that have contributed to this goal.
Reflecting on progress toward the Silicon Valley agenda, Prof. Ohene Afoakwa highlighted the ongoing construction of a new A-story building and the financial clearance for a six-story extension for the university’s graduate school and hostel facilities.
Additionally, the two discussed potential future collaborations, including student internships and related activities.
For his part, Prof. Robert Ebo Hinson, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, expressed his sincere gratitude for the donation and highlighted its importance in achieving the university’s ambitious goals. “At the breakfast meeting with the Vice-Chancellor a few months ago, we appealed to corporations to support our Silicon Valley Agenda. Today, we are here to accept the first of those donations,” he said.
Background to the donation
On February 2, 2024, GCTU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ohene Afoakwa, held the “1st Vice-Chancellor’s Executive Breakfast Meeting” with a section of alumnus from the institution to discuss the university’s initiative on how to foster growth, development, and strategies.
The meeting was aimed at how to leverage the expertise and corporate social responsibility initiatives of alumnus organisations to achieve the Silicon Valley Vision and avenues available to enhance the educational landscape of the youth in the university.
