The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the military takeover in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing the coup as “a direct assault on democratic governance” and a disruption of the country’s recently held elections.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana expressed “profound concern” over the unconstitutional seizure of power, which interrupted the anticipated announcement of the presidential and legislative election results scheduled for 27 November 2025.
“This brazen attempt to overturn the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau dangerously interrupts the democratic trajectory of the nation,” the statement read.
Ghana called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and urged all stakeholders to respect the democratic process. The government emphasized that any electoral grievances must be addressed through “peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised mechanisms.”
The statement also highlighted the importance of safeguarding the security and fundamental rights of all citizens and foreign nationals, particularly officials of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission deployed in Guinea-Bissau. “Their safety and secure passage must be guaranteed without delay,” it added.
Ghana appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and exercise restraint to avoid escalating tensions, and reaffirmed its full support for ECOWAS and the African Union in coordinating a response in line with regional and continental protocols on democracy and good governance.
