Ghana must fix ‘off-the-pitch’ football structures to succeed – Carlos Queiroz

Outgoing Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has urged Ghana to prioritise long-term reforms off the pitch, insisting that the future success of the national team will depend more on creating the right football structures than on results during matches.

In a farewell statement following his departure as head coach, the experienced Portuguese tactician said Ghana possesses extraordinary football talent but must provide the environment needed to nurture and protect it if the Black Stars are to consistently compete at the highest level.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch,” Queiroz said.

“Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”

The remarks are likely to reignite debate over the direction of Ghana football following the Black Stars’ campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with many observers calling for improvements in youth development, player welfare, technical planning and football administration.

Queiroz suggested that reaching a higher level should not be viewed as the ultimate achievement but rather the foundation for even greater ambitions.

“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions,” he stated.

While acknowledging that the team did not achieve complete sporting success, Queiroz maintained that the Black Stars restored respect and credibility on football’s biggest stage.

“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage.”

The former Black Stars coach also thanked the Ghana Football Association, his players, technical staff and supporters for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as an honour and privilege.
