Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has announced his departure from the Ghana national football team following the country’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a farewell message addressed to Ghanaians, Queiroz expressed gratitude to the Ghana Football Association leadership, his players, technical staff and supporters, describing his tenure as an honour and privilege despite falling short of complete sporting success.
Reflecting on the team’s journey, the Portuguese coach said football, like life, offers lessons beyond victories.
“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn.”
Queiroz said he leaves the role proud of what the team accomplished but admitted there was always a desire to achieve more.
“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions,” he said.
The outgoing coach stressed that the future success of the Black Stars would depend on more than performances on the pitch, calling for greater investment in structures that support player development and team preparation.
“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars success must start off the field by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent,” he noted.
Queiroz also thanked the President of the Ghana Football Association and its Board for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the national team.
“To my President and Board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honour and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars,” he said.
He further expressed appreciation to his players and technical staff for their commitment throughout his tenure.
“To my players and staff, my deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team,” he wrote.
Addressing Ghanaian supporters, Queiroz acknowledged that while the team’s campaign may not have delivered the desired sporting outcome, he believes the squad restored the image of the Black Stars on the global stage.
“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage,” he stated.
