A Ghanaian amateur boxer named Samed Shakul has admitted to using a drug without his knowledge before the start of the Commonwealth Games.
A day before entering the ring, Shakul tested positive for doping, and his participation in the Commonwealth Games was subsequently suspended.
But while discussing the subject for the first time, Shakur admitted that he had taken medications that were supposed to treat his fever but were actually illegal substances.
“It was just unfortunate that I took it,” he stated.
“I was unaware that this medication was a prohibited drug. Just two weeks before the tournament, I became ill, and because we were at home, nobody was willing to give us money. I was taking many medications. I would go to the pharmacy, let them know how I was feeling, and they would give me medication; as a result, I was just ingesting a lot of medications that I was unaware were prohibited things, “he explained further.
The heavyweight boxer apologized to Ghanaians for his inability to compete in the games.
“I want to use this opportunity to apologize to my supporters for not being able to fight; the use of an illegal drug wasn’t planned,” he continued.
Shakul remains prohibited from participating in the Commonwealth Games as the Federation continues its probe into the doping issue.
