A member of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Vishnu Nene Limon Abayateye, has expressed strong disapproval of a “unilateral” decision made by GMA President, Dr. Frank Serebour, in which the association opted not to join Organised Labour’s planned anti-Galamsey strike on October 10, 2024.
In response, Dr. Abayateye has formally petitioned for Dr. Serebour’s removal as President.
In his petition, dated October 8 and addressed to the GMA’s General Secretary, Dr. Abayateye accused Dr. Serebour of issuing a statement on behalf of the GMA without consulting the National Executive Council (NEC) or the General Assembly.
He argued that this unilateral action has harmed the GMA’s credibility, making it appear inconsistent, particularly in light of the association’s previous stance on illegal mining.
Dr. Abayateye also announced his intention to move a motion for Dr. Serebour’s removal at the upcoming annual general assembly meeting in Ho, scheduled for November 3-10, 2024, with the goal of securing the necessary two-thirds majority to pass the motion.
In a statement released on October 8, 2024, Dr. Frank Serebour affirmed the GMA’s support for Organised Labour’s cause but instructed members to continue providing services at health facilities across the country.
