The Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for the immediate release on bail of a teacher and hostel caretaker at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School who was arrested following an altercation with a final-year student.

In a statement issued on June 9, the association expressed concern over what it described as the manner in which the case is being handled and the continued detention of its member.

“GNAT Ashanti Region is concerned about the manner in which the matter is being handled and the continued detention of our colleague,” the statement said.

The association called on the Atwima Mponua Command of the Ghana Police Service to grant bail to the teacher without delay and urged the Ghana Education Service and school authorities to ensure that due process is followed.

GNAT warned that it would take industrial action should the teacher not be granted bail by Wednesday.

“Should the teacher not be granted bail by tomorrow, GNAT Ashanti Region will be compelled to direct teachers of Nyinahin Catholic SHS and all teachers in the district to boycott the ongoing WASSCE examinations,” the statement said.

It further indicated that teachers would be asked to wear red armbands and embark on a demonstration to express their displeasure with the handling of the matter.

The association said it remained committed to protecting the welfare and rights of teachers while promoting discipline in schools and called on the authorities to act swiftly to avert further escalation.

The statement was signed by the Ashanti Regional Secretary of GNAT, D. K. Atakora.

The development comes amid investigations by the Ashanti Regional Police Command into an alleged assault involving a female student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, an incident that gained public attention after a video of the confrontation circulated on social media
