The government has officially announced that it will hold a state funeral for the late former first lady, Mrs Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
The solemn ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Independence Square in Accra. The announcement was made in a communication released by the Presidency Communications on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
The decision by the government, under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama, is stated to be in recognition of Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings’ “invaluable contributions to the advancement of the rights of women and children in Ghana and national development.”
Mrs Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away on October 23, 2025, served as the longest-serving First Lady in Ghana’s history, holding the title for a combined 19 years alongside her husband, the late President Jerry John Rawlings. Her legacy includes founding and leading the 31st December Women’s Movement, which championed various development projects and advocacy initiatives across the country.
The state funeral arrangements were communicated by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, spokesperson to the president and Minister for Government Communications.
The announcement of the state funeral follows an earlier pledge made by President Mahama on October 29, 2025, during a visit to the family residence to commiserate with the bereaved family.
