Mfantsipim School secures back-to-back NSMQ titles in 2025 final

Mfantsipim School successfully defended their championship at the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), claiming their fourth national title. 

The final, held at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) NEC Auditorium, featured a competition between Mfantsipim School, St. Augustine’s College, and Opoku Ware School.

Competition Overview and Scoring

The final round brought together three of Ghana’s highly-regarded secondary schools. The contest involved five rounds, testing participants’ knowledge in science and mathematics.

Round-by-Round Breakdown

  1. Round 1 (Fundamentals): Mfantsipim School established an early lead, concluding the first round with 20 points, while St. Augustine’s College and Opoku Ware School were tied at 17 points each.

  2. Round 2 (Speed Race): St. Augustine’s College demonstrated strong performance in the speed round, overtaking the lead to finish the second round with 27 points. Mfantsipim School followed with 24 points, and Opoku Ware School maintained 17 points.

  3. Round 3 (Problem of the Day): Mfantsipim School regained the lead in the ‘Problem of the Day’ with a score of 30 points, narrowly ahead of St. Augustine’s College’s 29 points. Opoku Ware School scored 19 points in this round.

  4. Round 4 (True or False): Mfantsipim School extended their advantage, widening their lead to 46 points. St. Augustine’s College held 42 points, and Opoku Ware School had 29 points.

  5. Round 5 (Riddle): The defending champions maintained their focus through the final round of riddles. Mfantsipim School finished the competition with a total of 56 points, securing the championship.

Final Results

The final scores confirmed Mfantsipim School as the winner, successfully defending the title won in the previous year’s competition (2024), and marking their fourth overall victory in the history of the NSMQ.

  • 1st Place: Mfantsipim School – 56 points

  • 2nd Place: St. Augustine’s College – 42 points

  • 3rd Place: Opoku Ware School – 29 points
