The government has strongly condemned the “attempted arrest” of a JoyNews reporter and the reported assault of an eyewitness by a soldier during a demolition exercise.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday during the demolition of a warehouse purportedly belonging to the McDan Group, has sparked public outcry over press freedom and the conduct of security personnel.
The JoyNews reporter involved in the incident was reportedly covering a demolition operation when the soldier attempted to arrest him.
The same soldier is alleged to have physically assaulted a civilian who witnessed the exchange.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the Office of the President described the actions of the soldier as “utterly unacceptable” and emphasized that such behaviour has no place under the current administration.
“I am directed by President John Dramani Mahama to unequivocally reaffirm his unwavering commitment to the freedom and safety of journalists,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and spokesperson to the President.
“A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse,” he added.
The statement also stressed the government’s broader commitment to the protection of all citizens, noting that the rights of Ghanaians must be safeguarded at all times.
The statement added that President Mahama has directed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to launch a full investigation into the matter, adding that those responsible will face immediate and appropriate disciplinary action.
“Appropriate disciplinary and punitive measures must be applied without delay to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences,” the statement read.
