The Government of Ghana has formally endorsed and accepted all findings and recommendations contained in the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report presented by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, describing the document as a comprehensive and forward-looking roadmap toward lasting peace in the troubled municipality.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday, December 17, the Presidency said the report was “fact-based and forward-looking” and was not intended to apportion blame or confer victory on any party involved in the protracted conflict.
Government reaffirmed the settled legal position on the Bawku chieftaincy dispute, stressing that the Supreme Court of Ghana has consistently upheld Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba. It emphasized that “no individual or group is permitted, under any circumstances, to contest his authority or legitimacy.”
The statement also confirmed government’s acceptance of the recommendation concerning Alhaji Seidu Abagre, who was installed as a rival claimant.
According to the Presidency, he is to be recalled to Nalerigu by the Overlord of Mamprugu, the Nayiri, to assume an alternative traditional role with the facilitation and support of the state.
Government further announced that it would immediately facilitate the safe movement of Alhaji Seidu Abagre to Nalerigu, where he would remain available to receive directives from the Nayiri.
Reiterating its commitment to peace, constitutional order, and national cohesion, the government appealed to all stakeholders to support the reconciliation process in the supreme interest of stability in Bawku and its surrounding areas.
