The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced significant progress in restoring a damaged section of its 161kV transmission line between Akwatia and New Obuasi, which has disrupted electricity supply to Kumasi and parts of the middle belt since mid-March.
According to GRIDCo, the line was damaged on March 17, 2025, when a tree felled by illegal chainsaw operators struck a critical tower, resulting in a major fault.
The affected line is one of the key transmission routes supplying power to Kumasi and its surrounding areas, and the outage has had a noticeable impact on the quality of power in the region.
Maintenance teams were deployed the same day to assess and begin work on the damaged infrastructure. However, due to the extent of the destruction, engineers had to move in heavy-duty equipment, clear access routes, dismantle the affected tower and conductors, and reconstruct the tower entirely.
GRIDCo reports that reconstruction of the tower has now been completed as of April 17, and the remaining conductor stringing is expected to be finalised by Sunday, April 20, after which the line will be restored to service.
The company also expressed concern over the growing threat posed by illegal logging and mining activities, which frequently damage key infrastructure. GRIDCo is calling on the public to support efforts to curb such activities to protect the nation’s electricity transmission network.
GRIDCo has apologised to residents of Kumasi and surrounding areas for the inconvenience caused by the outage.
The statement was issued by Dzifa Bampoh, Manager of Corporate Communications at GRIDCo.
