UK-based Ghanaian Gospel artise, Dr. Sonnie Badu, has refuted claims that he was offered some USD 50,000 for performing at the fund-raising launch of the National Cathedral in the USA.
Through his management team, he responded to the claims that the planners of the launch made them believe that the event was a charitable one, although a token will be sent later to him for his team.
According to him, in the spirit of patriotism and the need to mobilize funds for the project, he agreed to perform. “Management agreed to perform on these terms based on the patriotic nature of the event.” The idea behind the invitation to sing, according to the organizers of the event, was to raise awareness [of] and solicit funds for the construction of the cathedral back home, “the release said.
He noted that after his session, the organizers were out of sight and did not pay any amount to them, adding that they left the venue about fifteen minutes after he had performed. He further noted that due to space, he and his team did not have seats for themselves.
The release emphasized that, “the management in the USA did not receive a dime and to date has not received any money from the organizers.” Therefore, the team wishes to dissociate and the International Act, Sonnie Badu, from any National Cathedral funds reimbursement allegations. “
The musician, who is also the pastor of the Rockhill Church in the USA, however, pledged his support in diverse ways toward projecting the good name of Ghana.
Last week, news making the rounds on social media, particularly from critics of the National Cathedral, claimed Dr. Badu had received USD 50,000 for his performance during the fundraising launch of the National Cathedral in Washington DC, USA in 2019.
