President John Dramani Mahama says the government has secured $2 billion in a special account to facilitate the commencement of work on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
According to Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the amount is expected to increase to $4 billion by the end of 2026, providing the full financing required for the project.
“President Mahama says there is currently $2 billion in a special account for the commencement of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway,” Mr Ofosu stated in a post on social media.
He added that “by close of year, there will be $4 billion in the account to fully finance the project.”
The announcement comes as the government steps up preparations for the construction of the major road corridor, which is expected to improve connectivity between Accra and Kumasi and reduce travel time between the two cities.
The project is also expected to ease congestion on the existing Accra-Kumasi highway, improve the movement of goods and people, and support economic activity along the corridor.
The proposed expressway forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at improving Ghana’s road network and strengthening transport links between major economic centres.
The availability of dedicated financing, according to the announcement, is expected to provide the financial backing needed for the project to move from preparatory stages into implementation.
