The search for the next man to steer the Black Stars appears to be nearing its final whistle, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) signalling that an appointment is virtually complete ahead of the country’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
GFA President Kurt Okraku says the new head coach is already engaged in preparations and only the formalities of signing the necessary documents remain before the appointment is officially announced.
He said this in an interview with 3Sports.
According to Mr Okraku, the coach is effectively “99 per cent” secured, with the recruitment process having reached its final stage.
He explained that the GFA had put the necessary machinery in place to complete the process and formalise the relationship with the incoming coach, giving an indication that the Black Stars are unlikely to enter the next international window without a permanent technical head.
The assurance comes after the position became vacant following the expiration of Carlos Queiroz’s contract. The Portuguese coach, who guided Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, left the role after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on an extension.
With the next AFCON qualifying campaign approaching, the GFA is under pressure to ensure the Black Stars have adequate technical leadership in place before the team regroups.
Ghana has been drawn in Group C of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers alongside regional rivals Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia, setting the stage for a potentially demanding qualification campaign.
Mr Okraku maintained that the appointment would be completed before the players return for the qualifiers, effectively assuring Ghanaians that the Black Stars will not begin their quest for a place at the 2027 tournament without a coach at the helm.
