Three senior officers have been interdicted by the Ghana Police Service after they were heard on a controversial audio tape that is currently being examined by a 7-member parliamentary committee.
The audio involves a discussion regarding the need for President Akufo-Addo to fire the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
In accordance with Police Service regulations, the three officers—Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Mr. Emmanuel Eric Gyebi, and Superintendent Mr. George Lysander Asare—have been placed on interdiction, according to a statement dated September 7, 2023, signed and issued by ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Police Public Affairs.
In their prior appearances before the Parliamentary Committee, Superintendent Asare and Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex Mensah both testified that the tape under scrutiny by the committee had allegedly been “doctored, cut, and pasted.”
Each officer has advised the committee to ask President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare for the original tape.
