President John Dramani Mahama has invited a wide range of civil society organisations (CSOs) to a high-level engagement on illegal mining, scheduled for Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The meeting, which will begin at 12:00 noon, forms part of the government’s renewed efforts to confront the menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, by fostering collaboration with civic, faith-based, professional, and advocacy groups.
In a statement issued and signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, the engagement is aimed at “harnessing collective expertise, perspectives and solutions to address this national challenge.”
The invitation has been extended to leading institutions, including the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Christian Council of Ghana, Office of the Chief Imam, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, IMANI Ghana, Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), A Rocha Ghana, Ghana Chamber of Mines, the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, University Teachers’ Association, Fix the Country movement, STAR-Ghana Foundation, Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Ghana Bar Association, Amnesty International, SEND Ghana, ActionAid International, and the Ghana Journalists Association, among others.
There has been recent backlash against the President following his response to a question on galamsey at his media briefing.
