The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a press statement denouncing a disturbing incident that transpired on Friday at the party’s Greater Accra Regional Office.
The event happened as the party was interviewing candidates for the upcoming primary election for the parliament in the Odododiodio constituency.
A group of irate people turned to vandalism and disorder throughout the screening procedure.
Akosua Otchere, a journalist from Citi FM/TV in Accra, was attacked and physically assaulted during the ensuing chaos.
But in a statement on October 13, 2023, the NDC unequivocally condemned the assault on Akosua Otchere, adding that the action by sections of its members does not reflect the values of the party.
“The NDC regrets and condemns the attack on Akosua Otchere in no uncertain terms. The conduct of the people who attacked the journalist is highly irresponsible and does not reflect our identity as defenders of press freedom and a party that fosters a cordial working relationship with the media,” the National Communication Officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi, noted in the statement.
The party apologised to the journalist and her media house while declaring that it would ensure that the perpetrators of the act were brought to justice.
“We wish to unreservedly apologise to the journalist, Akosua Otchere, and the entire Citi FM/TV fraternity for this sad development.”
“The party takes full responsibility for this unfortunate incident and assures the general public that we shall take immediate steps to fish out the perpetrators. All those found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the disciplinary rules of the party and the laws of Ghana,” the statement added.
