Forty-year-old lawyer, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, will represent the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming Akwatia parliamentary by-election.
Baidoo emerged victorious in the party’s primary, narrowly defeating Erasmus Koney Ali by 380 votes to 366. Former MP for the constituency, Henry Yiadom Boakye, secured 226 votes. Out of 975 valid ballots cast, three were rejected. Although 1,075 delegates were expected to vote, 101 were absent.
The declaration of results was made by Electoral Commission official, John Appiah Bamfo. The Commission has scheduled the by-election for September 2, following the death of the sitting MP, Eric Kumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking after his win, Baidoo expressed gratitude to delegates and commended his opponents for contributing to a peaceful contest. He urged party supporters to remain united in the drive to reclaim the seat from the NPP.
“This victory is for the entire NDC family in Akwatia. We must put aside our differences, work together, and secure the seat in the by-election,” he said.
Baidoo expressed confidence that voters in the constituency were ready for change and would rally behind him to support President John Dramani Mahama’s development agenda.
