The NPP has formally acclaimed Baba Ali Yussif as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency, scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the party’s headquarters in Accra on Monday, February 9, following what the party described as extensive consultations aimed at selecting a consensus candidate with strong prospects of winning the seat.
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally acclaimed Baba Ali Yussif as its Parliamentary Candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency,” the statement said.
According to the party, the process was led by its National Executive Committee (NEC), which engaged key stakeholders within the constituency and the Greater Accra Region to identify a suitable candidate.
“This decision follows extensive consultations by the National Executive Committee (NEC) with key stakeholders, aimed at identifying a consensus candidate with the strongest prospects of winning the seat,” the statement noted.
As part of the process, the NEC constituted a Candidate Search Committee chaired by former NPP General Secretary, John Boadu. The committee conducted engagements with party structures in the constituency before unanimously recommending Baba Ali Yussif, who currently serves as the Constituency Secretary.
“After broad and thorough engagements with relevant stakeholders within the Ayawaso East Constituency and the Greater Accra Region, the Committee unanimously recommended Baba Ali Yussif… as the most suitable candidate,” the party said.
The recommendation was subsequently endorsed at an expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting and a Delegates Conference held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, where delegates unanimously acclaimed him as the party’s candidate.
“At this meeting, Baba Ali Yussif was unanimously acclaimed by delegates as the NPP’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election,” the statement added.
The NPP has called on its members, supporters and sympathisers to unite behind the candidate ahead of the by-election whilst urging constituents to vote massively for him to help “restore hope, effective representation, and prosperity to the Constituency.”
