The NPP has entered the decisive phase of its presidential primary as ballot counting begins across polling centres nationwide, bringing an end to hours of voting by delegates.
Party leadership says the process has so far reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy, with most polling stations recording a calm and orderly exercise. Security agencies remain on alert as electoral officials collate results from constituencies across the country.
However, the close of voting has been accompanied by reports of irregularities at a limited number of centres. Allegations of vote-buying have surfaced, drawing the attention of party officials and security personnel tasked with enforcing electoral rules. In addition, some individuals were arrested for allegedly using unauthorised body cameras at polling stations, actions said to contravene party guidelines governing the conduct of the primaries.
The NPP has assured members and the general public that all reported breaches will be thoroughly investigated and addressed in line with party regulations, stressing that such incidents remain isolated and have not disrupted the overall process.
As results are awaited, the party has appealed to delegates, supporters and aspirants to remain calm and exercise restraint, underscoring the importance of unity as the party prepares for the next electoral cycle.
Five candidates are contesting the race to lead the party into the 2028 general elections. They include businessman Kennedy Agyapong; former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
