NPP Council of Elders to supervise campaigns ahead of 2026 primaries

The National Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set up an ad hoc committee to oversee the conduct of the party’s presidential primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The move, announced in a statement on Monday, September 15, 2025, comes after a meeting with the party’s presidential hopefuls last Thursday.

Signed by Council Chairman Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, the statement explained that the committee’s role is to ensure that the campaign process is fair, transparent, and consistent with the traditions and values of the party.

It stressed that the exercise must be conducted with decorum and respect for party unity.

Chaired by Ing. Dr Kwasi Abeasi, with Dr Alex Glover-Quartey, Ato Hamilton, Kwadwo Afari, and Mark Opoku as members, the committee has been tasked with monitoring the remarks and actions of aspirants and their supporters throughout the campaign period.

It will also review petitions on issues such as hate speech, insults, or abusive language and recommend appropriate measures or sanctions where necessary to preserve the dignity and image of the NPP.

The Council of Elders urged aspirants, campaign teams, and supporters to cooperate fully with the committee as it carries out its mandate.

“The Party remains committed to conducting a peaceful, respectful, and dignified primary process that strengthens our unity and readiness for the national elections,” the statement affirmed.
