Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer after securing a clear majority in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31.
The former Vice President polled 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, crossing the required threshold on the first ballot and positioning himself to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
He was followed by Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who placed second with 46,554 votes, equivalent to 23.76 per cent. Dr. Bryan Acheampong finished third after securing 36,303 votes, representing 18.53 per cent of the total votes.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum placed fourth with 1,999 votes, accounting for 1.02 per cent, while Kwabena Agyei Agyepong came fifth with 402 votes, representing 0.21 per cent.
The internal election was conducted nationwide, with more than 211,000 accredited delegates casting their ballots at 333 polling centres across all 275 constituencies. Voting and counting took place under tight security, with party officials overseeing the process to ensure transparency and credibility.
Early results from constituency-level collation had pointed to a commanding lead for Dr. Bawumia, an indication of broad-based support among party delegates across the country. By the close of counting, his margin had put the outcome beyond doubt.
Party leadership and election observers described the exercise as largely peaceful and well organised, reporting only isolated and minor incidents during the voting process.
In his victory remarks, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to delegates for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to lead a united and inclusive campaign. He called on supporters of all aspirants to close ranks and work together to secure victory for the party in the next general elections.
