The Electoral Commission has dissociated itself from a purported declaration of incumbent Farouk Aliu Mahama as the winner of Saturday’s NPP parliamentary primaries in Yendi.
The Commission, in a statement on Monday, January 29, 2024, said that it had only counted a section of 785 total ballots in favour of Hon. Mahama when the counting process was disrupted by some persons.
“The counting of ballots for the incumbent, Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama, was disrupted when the Presiding Officer had counted two hundred and ninety-six votes in his favor,” the EC’s statement partly read.
“Unfortunately, the destruction of four hundred and eighty-nine (489) ballots that remain to be counted made it impossible for the presiding officer to complete the collation and declare the results,” the statement added.
