At least 11 people have died and 13 others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash at the Ofankor Barrier area on the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch of the N6 highway in Accra.

The crash occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, between the Ofankor Barrier and the John Teye enclave, involving 24 people.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said seven vehicles were involved in the crash. They comprised two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars and a tricycle, popularly known as an aboboyaa.

The collision occurred on the express lane from the Pokuase direction towards Achimota, resulting in significant traffic congestion along the route.

Several victims were trapped in a badly mangled black minibus following the crash.

Rescue teams from the Amasaman Fire Station and the GNFS headquarters were deployed to the scene to assist with the rescue operation. Fire personnel later succeeded in extricating all trapped victims.

The 13 injured persons were transported to the Achimota Hospital for medical treatment.

Police officers were also deployed to the area to manage traffic and maintain order. Motorists were redirected onto the outer service lane while rescue and recovery operations continued.

The fatal incident has caused major disruption to traffic on the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch, with authorities continuing efforts to clear the affected section of the highway.

Further details are expected as investigations into the crash continue.
