The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has commenced a preliminary investigation into a purported memorandum in which Deputy Minority Leader and Asokwa MP, Patricia Appiagyei, reportedly returned GH¢70,000 allocated to her in connection with the work of Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

In a public notice dated September 4, 2026, the OSP said it had taken note of the document circulating in the media, purportedly authored by Mrs Appiagyei and addressed to Minority Chief Whip and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

According to the OSP, the document alleges that Mrs Appiagyei returned GH¢70,000 she had received as an advance from the Majority Chief Whip in relation to the vetting of two ministerial nominees and three Supreme Court nominees.

The OSP said the constitutional importance of the Appointments Committee and the need to safeguard the integrity of the vetting process had prompted it to examine the claims contained in the document.

It said particular attention was being paid to Mrs Appiagyei’s purported concerns about the source of the funds and allegations that the money could have the “hallmarks of extortion” involving the nominees.

“The OSP has commenced preliminary investigation into the veracity of the document, the source of the alleged funds, and the purpose of the alleged funds,” the notice stated.

As part of the investigation, the OSP said it had dispatched a communication inviting Mrs Appiagyei to appear before the office and assist with the preliminary inquiry.

The investigation follows Mrs Appiagyei’s reported decision to return the GH¢70,000, saying she did not know the source of the money and did not want to derive any financial benefit from vetting colleagues in leadership on the Majority side.

She also linked her decision to the Minority Caucus’ protest and non-participation in the vetting of three Supreme Court nominees.

The OSP further disclosed that the matter forms part of a broader investigation into allegations involving Members of Parliament.

“The OSP is actively investigating all extortion allegations involving Members of Parliament,” it said.
