The Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MoMAG) says sustained interventions across security, fraud prevention and policy advocacy have significantly strengthened Ghana’s mobile money ecosystem, including a 28 per cent reduction in attacks on mobile money agents.
In a statement issued in Accra, MoMAG said its actions over the past year were aimed at protecting agents, safeguarding customers and reinforcing trust in digital financial services.
“MoMAG is proud to have contributed directly to the resilience of the agent ecosystem,” the group said, noting that mobile money agents remain the backbone of Ghana’s fast-growing digital payments network.
One of the group’s key initiatives in 2025 was the training of 43,000 mobile money agents nationwide on fraud prevention, safety drills and customer service. According to MoMAG, the capacity-building programme strengthened frontline service delivery and reduced vulnerabilities to scams.
To further protect customers, MoMAG rolled out a nationwide “No ID, No Deal” campaign, which it says sharply reduced impersonation fraud.
“The campaign helped add 1.2 million active wallets in a single month, while protecting customers and deepening responsible usage,” the association stated.
MoMAG also pointed to its engagement with regulators and mobile network operators, which resulted in fairer cash-out fees and the introduction of 24/7 instant transaction reversals.
“These measures helped keep an estimated GH¢39.6 billion safely in wallets, reinforcing mobile money’s role in everyday commerce,” the group said.
Security emerged as a major focus following a spate of robberies targeting agents. MoMAG said it pushed for greater police visibility, targeted security education and faster prosecution through dedicated courts, leading to a marked decline in attacks.
“Protecting agents means protecting livelihoods and sustaining the dense network that underpins Ghana’s mobile money reach,” the statement added.
Beyond these interventions, MoMAG continues to provide welfare support, soft loans to expand agent businesses, security guidance and regular engagement with regulators and telcos.
The association said it remains committed to building “a safer, cheaper and stronger mobile money ecosystem that matches global best standards.”
