Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has stated that the party’s nationwide “Enough is Enough” demonstration, demanding an audit of the voter’s register, is aimed at preventing potential conflict in the future.
Speaking to thousands of NDC supporters during the protest on Tuesday, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah emphasised that it would be irresponsible for the NDC and Ghanaians not to press the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure a thorough cleanup of the voter’s register. He warned that failure to act could lead to dire consequences.
“Today is our time. We must not let our ancestors down. We must not let our future generations down. It is our time to fight. What we are doing is preventing war in this country,” the NDC Chairman declared.
“If you want to prevent war, you fight and remove anything that has the tendency to generate war. There is no option. There is no sitting on the fence. If you sit on the fence and allow conflict to mature into war, you will be conscripted into the army to fight and die,” he added.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah further cautioned the Electoral Commission, stating that if the NDC’s demands are not addressed, the party would escalate its protests to the district and constituency offices of the EC, vowing that the party “will fight and fight until the right thing is done.”
The NDC is pushing for an independent forensic audit of the 2024 voter’s register, citing “serious discrepancies” in the document.
Initially, the party sought a meeting with the EC to address these concerns, with a request to have the proceedings televised.
However, the EC declined the request, explaining that broadcasting such meetings was not customary.
The EC also defended its position by pointing out that the weeklong voter exhibition exercise was specifically designed to correct any errors and discrepancies in the voter’s register.
