More than 60 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have reportedly converged at the office of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to express their backing for his widely anticipated bid to lead the party into the 2028 presidential election.
The MPs, drawn from constituencies across the country, held a closed-door meeting with Dr. Bawumia on Thursday afternoon.
The development follows the party’s announcement that its presidential primary will be held on 31 January 2026—a timeline set by the National Executive Committee (NEC) on Tuesday, 17 June, to allow for early consolidation around a flagbearer ahead of the next general election.
Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP as its presidential candidate in the 2024 election, has expressed public interest in contesting the party’s presidential slot but is yet to formally declare his candidacy.
He is expected to face intense competition from figures such as Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong, who have also declared their intention to vie for the same position.
The NPP is expected to formally open nominations in the coming months.
