The Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Osei-Asare, has called for sexual abuse cases involving students to be referred to law enforcement agencies rather than handled solely through the internal disciplinary processes of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Her call follows public concern over sexual abuse allegations involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
Speaking during a PAC sitting on October 20, 2026, Mrs Osei-Asare addressed the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, on the need for the police to investigate allegations of sexual abuse involving students.
“Don’t let us fail our young ladies,” she said, urging the authorities to ensure that such cases receive the necessary attention.
She argued that allegations involving possible criminal conduct should be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for investigation and possible prosecution, rather than being dealt with exclusively as administrative or disciplinary matters within the education system.
Meanwhile, the issue has also attracted attention from civil society organisations, including Africa Education Watch, which has raised concerns about the handling of the allegations involving Obuasi SHTS.
The organisation asserted municipal and GES officials were aware of the allegations but handled the matter internally instead of referring the criminal allegations to the appropriate legal authorities.
