The Ghana Police Service has arrested Kumasi-based broadcaster Oheneba Nana Asiedu for allegedly spreading false information about the December 7 general elections, a violation of Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
On Saturday, November 23, 2024, a police statement announced the arrest in response to a viral video circulating on social media.
In the video, recorded at Wontumi FM in Kumasi, Oheneba allegedly claimed that voters would cast their ballots for presidential candidates on different days—a statement the police have dismissed as false and potentially disruptive to public peace.
Oheneba was invited for questioning, taken into custody, and will face legal proceedings in court. In a separate statement, the police underscored the risks of misinformation during politically sensitive periods and emphasised the importance of accurate and responsible communication in safeguarding national stability.
The Ghana Police Service further cautioned media practitioners and the public against disseminating unverified or false information, warning of the severe consequences such actions could have on public order.
