The Volta Regional Police Command has intercepted a substantial amount of Ghanaian currency totaling GHS 1,021,700, hidden in fertilizer bags and being transported in a commercial vehicle.
According to a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit on Wednesday, the interception took place on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, around 4:45 p.m., during a snap check operation at Juapong, a key checkpoint along the route to Kumasi.
The vehicle, a Ford Transit Bus, was found to be carrying 68 fertilizer bags filled with GHS 1 notes and coins.
The driver, identified as Edward Ansah, informed investigators that he had been hired by an unidentified individual based in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, to transport the money from Ho in the Volta Region.
The driver has since been taken into police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities have yet to determine the source and intended use of the large sum, raising suspicions about possible money laundering or illicit financial activities.
Police say updates will be provided as investigations progress.
